Cataraqui Canoe Club
Guidelines for Paddling from the Boathouse

For use by boathouse supervisor

1. Keys
If you are supervising the boathouse you will need two keys: one for the main door and one for the equipment storage room. You can obtain them from the Boathouse Manager.

2. Safety information
Refer to the sheet posted in the register, on the bulletin board and in the equipment room. [Also available here on the website].

3. Boats and equipment
Members and their guests may use club canoes and kayaks without charge when the boathouse is open for paddling. A current list of members is kept in the sign-out book. Members have first priority in using the boats.

Only club-owned boats may be borrowed. A list of these boats is kept with the membership list. Most of the club-owned boats are numbered and painted with the club logo.

Life jackets, paddles, skirts and safety kits (throw rope, whistle and bailer) are kept in the equipment room. "Private" boat owners have a key to the boathouse for personal access.

After use, all boats and paddles should be rinsed clean if required, using the outside hose. All equipment other than canoes and kayaks should be returned to the equipment room. Life jackets and skirts should be hung up.

4. Sign-out routine
a) All participants should review the hazards involved in paddling from the boathouse to ensure it is within their risk tolerance and ability.

b) Paddlers are to record their name, date, and number of the boat they are paddling together with their signature on the waiver. Signatures on the waiver must be witnessed

c) Guests are limited to two visits. Please refer to previous sign-up lists to ensure that this number is not exceeded. Guests must sign a waiver on every visit.

d) Remind paddlers that boats are to be returned before dusk or time to lock the boathouse.

e) Inform the supervisor of your route if you plan to be out of sight of the boathouse. Enter any other pertinent comments.

5. Repairs or damage
A member or guest who damages equipment will be held responsible for the damage.

Please let the Boathouse Manager know about any problems with the building or equipment, and note defects in the register.

6. Telephone
The telephone is located in the storage room. Do not answer it if it rings, as it is used for an outgoing recorded message. Make sure you know the phone's location in case of an emergency.

7. General inquiries
Club brochures and membership application forms are available at the desk in the boathouse. Inform the membership secretary if there are new applicants, or supplies are low.

The club's telephone number, 613 544 8375, is listed in the Kingston telephone directory. A recording provides information on upcoming events.

The club's website is cataraquicanoe.on.ca

Direct inquiries about rental space to the Boathouse Manager. The annual fee for canoe or kayak storage for members is $78.00. A $10.00 deposit is charged for the boathouse key.

Club canoes and kayaks are available for rent by club members for use only on club-organized trips. The trip leader or delegate supervises these rentals. The daily rental fees are $12.00 for a canoe and $10.00 for a kayak. For a whitewater canoe, a special charge of $18.00 per day is made. The fees include the use of paddles, life jackets and other safety equipment. A member renting a paddle, life jacket or other safety equipment, without renting a boat, is charged $1.00 for each item.

8. When closing the boathouse, please ensure that:
- All equipment is put away
- All lights are out, including those in the washrooms and the storage room
- Doors to the washroom corridor and the storage room are locked
- The bay door is closed and locked, and
- The entrance door is shut tight
