Paddling clinics: 2017

It's a good idea to take a canoeing clinic if you are not an experienced paddler, both for your own safety and to avoid the discouragement of being out of control in a strong wind. After one of these clinics, you will be able to improve your skills by paddling on your own or with more experienced paddlers.

Individual instruction

Jim MacLachlan has offered to give one-on-one instruction to CCC members interested in improving their paddling skills – kayak or canoe. If you recognize you have a particular weakness or a skill you wish to develop (e.g., bracing, rolling, J-stroke, etc.) Jim would be pleased to give you technical advice. His availability this summer is limited, so candidate students should give him a call at 613 382 8682 to confirm availability. The instruction is likely to take place at Grass Creek Park (about 14 km east of the causeway on Hwy 2) because this is close to Jim and a pleasant paddling spot with a beach launch. Lessons will be approximately one hour.
A fee of $10.00 per session will be paid to the Cataraqui Canoe Club.

Paddling Skills:

A good portion of the instruction will be on a good forward stroke. Other useful strokes for maneuvering will be covered. This class will be outdoors on local water. This class will occupy most of a day – like a club trip. It will be preceded with about 2 hours of on-land instruction including viewing of videos, likely to be the evening before. The number of students will be limited to 10.

The required equipment is a kayak, paddle, spray skirt and the Transport Canada safety requirements of a pfd, signaling device (whistle), 15 m floating line, and bailing equipment (bilge pump).

The class will take place in July or August (exact date to be determined to suit students).

The cost of the “Paddling Skills” class is $10, all of which goes to the CCC.

If you are interested in participating in the paddling skills class, please call Jim MacLachlan at 613 382-8682 before June 15.
